AMD CPUs showing performance drop on Windows 11 could be a serious issue as Alder Lake will soon hit the market

In the latest benchmark tests, the folks at toms hardware have tested the so-called bug which the AMD CPUs are facing on Windows 11 leading to extreme performance drops in gaming performance. In the CPU benchmarks, they found that AMD’s L3 latency can be as much as six times higher in Windows 11 compared to Windows 10.

addressing the issues, last week AMD announced that it and Microsoft are jointly investigating two performance-sapping bugs in Windows 11. and the bugs are series as the CPU maker itself has announced that the bugs will impact all Windows 11-compatible AMD processors and can reduce gaming performance by up to 15% in some eSports titles and 3-5% in desktop PC applications.

Windows 10 vs Windows 11 Gaming Performance Benchmarks

In the tests, Windows 11 Pro 23000.258 and the Windows 11-compatible Nvidia 472.12 graphics driver were used and the resolution was kept at 1920×1080 resolution for fairness, and for the comparison unit, Intel’s Core i7-11700K was used.

AMD has already stated that the CPPC2 bug (boosting) impacts chips with more than eight cores the most. And in the tests conducted, though AMD believes the eSports titles to suffer the most, it was Project Cars 3 that was affected in a big way.

The Ryzen 9 5900X is 7.5% slower in Windows 11, while the Ryzen 7 5800X is 5.3% slower. Meanwhile, the 11700K only drops 1.9%. in Far Cry 5 benchmark, there was a drop of 3.9% for AMD but the 5800X offered roughly the same level of performance with both Windows 10 and 11.

Windows 10 to Windows 11 Performance Change — Tom’s Hardware

Tom’s HardwareRyzen 9 5900XRyzen 7 5800XCore i7-11700K
Project Cars 3-7.3%-5.3%-1.9%
Shadow of the Tomb Raider+4.8%-0.8%
Dota 2-2.9%-1.4%+1.9%
Strange Brigade-2.0%-1.2%
Red Dead Redemption 2+2.9%
Far Cry 5-3.9%-1.7%
Grand Theft Auto V0.3%-0.5%-0.2%

Above you can see the tally of the performance deltas and as you see AMD’s 5900X does lose the most performance among the tested games, but most of the variances are very small.

However, these bugs could cause some serious issues for AMD, as Windows 11 is the latest OS which everyone was waiting and the OS is simply amazing. But the problem is that Intel’s Alder Lake will be hitting the market pretty soon and this bug could help swing the advantage back in Intel’s favour, and Windows 11 has new scheduler optimization is specifically designed for Alder Lake, so reviewers will use the new operating system for testing.
