The 3D V-Cache technology appears to improve gaming performance on AMD’s Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPU’s integrated GPU. The AMD Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs include an entry-level RDNA 2 iGPU with only 2 compute units or 128 stream processors. These cores operate at 400 MHz base clock and 2200 MHz graphics frequency. These chips provide slightly better GPU performance than the Nintendo Switch, which is rated at 500 GFLOPs, with up to 0.563 TFLOPs of compute power.

We’ve already seen how these chips perform on standard Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs, both stock and overclocked. PCMag put the iGPU on the newly released Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs to the test, and the results are, to say the least, fascinating. Benchmarking in games reveals a massive 4.3 times performance gain at 720p and up to 4 times at 1080p when compared to non-3D V-Cache CPUs.

F1 2022, Total War: Three Kingdoms, Tomb Raider, and Bioshock Infinite were among the games tested. While these performance figures are still inferior to Intel’s iGPUs found in its own desktop lineup, they demonstrate the benefits that 3D V-Cache can bring to APUs.

AMD’s APUs especially the Ryzen 7000 series have some really powerful iGPUs, or integrated graphics processors.

AMD’s latest Ryzen 7040 “Phoenix” APU lineup for laptops will include up to 12 RDNA 3 compute units. While there is no imminent desktop release, we could see a future AMD desktop lineup that includes RDNA 3 or enhanced GPU sub-sections on the same monolithic die. Given how bandwidth-constrained these iGPUs are, a single stack of 3D V-Cache, such as the ones found on Ryzen 7000 X3D parts, can result in significant performance gains.

So far, AMD 3D V-Cache technology has only been integrated into chiplet processors, whereas APUs use a monolithic design approach. Given the efficiency of 3D V-Cache chips for gaming, they have the potential to be an excellent platform for laptop gamers. AMD has brought the same desktop die to laptops in the form of the Dragon Range “Ryzen 7045 series,” but no APU with 3D V-Cache is available.
