Amazon Retail with announced agronomy services to empower farmers with the help of Technology

Amazon Retail on Tuesday announced the launch of its agronomy services for farmers that will provide timely advice and enable them to make accurate decisions on actions required for their crops.

The initiative will also introduce machine learning technology for better products and build a robust supply chain infrastructure, a statement said. Amazon Retail is engaged in the business of manufacturing and retailing food products produced and/or manufactured in India.

Amazon Retail is taking the first steps to crack India’s outmoded agricultural sector, hoping to secure the farm produce that yields two-thirds of the country’s $1-trillion in annual retail spending. As a result, Amazon Retail has built an ecosystem through a combination of agronomist-driven field interventions, and farm management tools to track the impact of interventions.

Securing steady supplies of fruit, vegetables, and other groceries is considered the key to dominating Indian online commerce. “Unless Amazon, Walmart, Reliance, and others crack the farm supply chain, they cannot unlock big growth in e-commerce,” said Arvind Singhal, chair of retail consultancy Technopak Advisors. “Gaining goodwill at the grassroots level by building a strong relationship with farmers will help them get predictable, quality produce all year at stable prices,” he added.

The program includes proactive and reactive cropping schemes. Active Crop Scheme is based on scientific cropping and soil management practices and aims to provide better yield and quality, Reactive Cropping Scheme is an intervention-based initiative, where farmers can provide information on pests, diseases, etc., and remedial measures for their agricultural problems.

Currently, 80 percent of the farmers associated with us have access to a personalized crop plan on their mobile app, which has the capability to raise responsive cropping queries and get solutions as and when required.
