Amazon Prime Video to Introduce Advertisements in India Starting 2025, Aims for Competitive Edge

From 2025, shows and movies on the platform in India will have ad breaks midway for viewers of Amazon Prime Video. The move, already done in the United States, is part of Amazon’s plan to generate more cashflow for investment after spending billions on content as competition intensifies in streaming.

The company, in an official statement, said: “To continue investing in compelling content and to increase that investment over the long term, starting in 2025, Prime Video shows and movies will include limited advertisements in India”. Amazon said it plans to have “meaningfully fewer” ads than its competitors and will continue investing more in content over time.

Users that want to watch without being interrupted by advertisements will likely need to shell out more for the service, although details on pricing of those plans have not been revealed. Notably, in 2025 the price of Prime membership will be the same as it is today. However, Amazon said users would be notified via email “several weeks in advance” with details about ad-free options before adverts are introduced.

It highlights the increasing number of competitive streaming services. As per data analytics firm Comscore, the $8.5 billion deal between Reliance and Disney would level out half of India’s stream watchers as they offer necessary pinch that will drive others to assist on those lines.

In India, Amazon has been making massive investments on its platform to cater of rapidly expanding user base. Earlier this week, Mike Hopkins, senior vice president at Prime Video said that more people in India had signed up for Amazon Prime than any other country over recent years. Some other reports suggest that the Indian internet industry is expected to reach a valuation of $5 trillion by 2030.
