Amazon’s God of War Series Is in Production — First Look at Kratos & Atreus

The wait is real. Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have officially confirmed that production has begun on the Prime Video series God of War, dropping a first-look image of father and son on their first hunt together — and the internet has a lot of feelings about it.

Ryan Hurst plays Kratos, with Callum Vinson as his young son Atreus. The supporting cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, and Alastair Duncan as Mimir.

The Story, the Hype, and the Mixed First Reactions

The series follows Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of wife and mother Faye — Kratos trying to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human. It’s the emotional core that made the 2018 PlayStation game a modern classic.

The first-look image depicts the iconic hunting scene from the very beginning of God of War (2018), immediately after Kratos and Atreus burn Faye’s ashes — a heavy, emotional moment and a solid callback for game fans.

Fan reactions have been predictably split. Some love the faithfulness to the source material; others feel the image lacks the mythological weight of the games. As TechnoSports has noted, video game adaptations live and die by execution — and a single still can only tell so much of the story.

God of War is executive produced by longtime series director Cory Barlog and PlayStation’s Hermen Hulst alongside Ronald D. Moore. No release date has been set yet.
