Chelsea owner Todd Boehly had put forth the idea of a North vs South Premier League All-Star game, as is the case in America. The reason behind this was that it would allow the English clubs to raise more money and sustain themselves. However, this idea was heavily criticized after Todd Boehly came forward with it.
According to The Times, the club executives have recently discussed hosting an All-Star game. The most popular idea was hosting an All-Star Football game between Premier League XI and La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga XI.
The game could bring in massive revenues and broadcasting rights from all over the world. The games can be held across Europe or outside Europe as well during the winter or summer break.
The concept of All-Star games is prevalent in American sports like NBA, MLB and MLS. Now, half of all top-flight clubs have some form of investment from the United States and so the owners are pushing to implement the idea of an All-Star game in the Premier League as well.
All-Star Football game: Premier League XI vs La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga XI has been proposed
Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, who first proposed this idea, also owns shares in MLB side Los Angeles Dodgers and the LA Lakers in the NBA. He said: “Ultimately, I hope the Premier League takes a little bit of a lesson from American sports. People are talking about more money for the pyramid; in the MLB all-star game this year we made $200 million (£181 million).”
However, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp thinks this is a bad idea. He said: “When he finds a date for that, he can call me. In American sports, these players have four-month breaks. Does he want to bring the Harlem Globetrotters as well?”
