Real-Life Tragedy That Shook a Nation

The real-life case behind the story saw the brutal kidnapping and murder of siblings Geeta and Sanjay Chopra in 1978. The horrifying crime sparked widespread public outrage and led to one of the most closely followed trials of its time.

The culprits, Kuljeet Singh (Ranga) and Jasbir Singh (Billa), were sentenced to death, with the executions carried out in 1982. Their case remains a grim chapter in India’s criminal history, remembered for the sheer brutality and the ripple effects it had on policing and public safety in Delhi.

In a rare pairing, Fazal and Bendre will portray the central investigative officers charged with unraveling the chilling case. Known for his intense screen presence and ability to dive deep into complex roles, Ali Fazal brings a sharp edge to the detective archetype. Meanwhile, Sonali Bendre, making a strong return to fiction after her recent OTT success, is expected to offer a nuanced portrayal of a determined, emotionally driven officer.

According to a source closely associated with the production, “The team has been researching the case for several months. Both Sonali and Ali will be playing investigative officers who will be working on solving the case. Shooting is underway in Delhi and is expected to continue through the end of April. This is the first time a series based on the Ranga-Billa case is being made, and it will explore the events in depth.”

Pan-India Shoot Captures Era and Emotion

While the primary schedule is taking place across various corners of Delhi, the production will soon shift to multiple locations in Uttar Pradesh, recreating scenes pivotal to the timeline of the case. The final leg of the shoot is planned for Mumbai later this month. Each locale has been chosen to maintain the authenticity of the narrative, ensuring a visually compelling and historically grounded retelling.

Aiming for a Year-End Premiere

Post-production is expected to commence in June and carry through July. With editing, sound design, and scoring lined up immediately after filming wraps, the creators are eyeing a release by the end of the year across digital platforms. The web series is anticipated to be more than just a retelling; it promises to be an emotional and investigative dive into a crime that left a permanent scar on Indian society.

With the rise in interest surrounding real-life crime adaptations on streaming platforms, this project stands out for its focus on a less-explored, yet profoundly significant case. By bringing together seasoned actors and meticulous research, the show looks to engage viewers both emotionally and intellectually, offering not just entertainment but also reflection on justice, loss, and social impact.
