After her outstanding efforts for club and nation this season, Alexia Putellas has been voted the 2021 Women’s Ballon d’Or winner.

Alexia Putellas Segura, born on 4 February 1994, is a Spanish footballer who currently plays as a midfielder for Barcelona in the Primera División and for the Spanish national team. She is highly considered as one of the world’s top players.

After spending the majority of her childhood career with Espanyol, Putellas has been with Barcelona since 2012. She has five league titles, six Copa de la Reina trophies, and one UEFA Women’s Champions League title since joining Barcelona. She was instrumental in Barcelona’s win of the UEFA Women’s Champions League and a continental treble in the 2020–21 season, both of which were firsts in the club’s history.

In the Primera Iberdrola, the 27-year-old played a key role in Barca’s treble-winning season, scoring 18 goals and providing 12 assists.

Alexia enjoyed success with Spain’s youth national teams on the international scene, winning two UEFA Women’s U-17 Euros in 2010 and 2011, as well as finishing second in the 2012 UEFA Women’s U-19 Euro. She first represented Spain at the senior level in 2012, and has since played in three major international tournaments with the team: the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the 2017 UEFA Women’s Euro, and the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Alexia has made the third-most appearances for Barcelona and is their second-highest all-time scorer, following only Jennifer Hermoso, as of 2022.

She also has 93 caps for Spain, beating Marta Torrejón’s previous record of 90 caps set in 2021.

Alexia was a lifelong Barcelona supporter who spent a year at their youth academy when she was 11 years old.
