Renowned Bollywood actor Akshaye Khanna, known for his nuanced performances in both commercial and offbeat cinema, is all set to make his Telugu film debut.
The veteran star, who recently appeared in Chhaava, will feature in an integral role in Mahakali, the third installment in the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU). Touted as the first female-led superhero saga in Telugu cinema, Mahakali promises not only high-octane action and mythology-inspired storytelling but also a fresh perspective on beauty and representation.
A Cinematic Leap: Khanna Joins PVCU
Sources close to the film’s development confirm Akshaye’s casting in a “pivotal” role, although the nature of his character remains under wraps. Whether he portrays a formidable antagonist or a mysterious ally is still undisclosed. However, insiders tease that “his role will add intrigue and depth to the growing PVCU universe. His role will span across multiple films in the franchise and will prove to be an exciting addition. We’re hoping Mahakali is received as well as HanuMan was.”
This move marks a significant milestone for the actor, as he steps into a new cinematic territory, embracing Telugu-language storytelling and diving into a fantastical superhero realm. For fans of Akshaye, this new avatar holds much promise and anticipation.
Mahakali: A Superheroine Redefining Norms
What sets Mahakali apart is not just its superhero premise, but the fact that it places a female protagonist at the center—a bold departure from traditional male-centric superhero narratives in Indian cinema. Helmed by director Puja Aparna Kolluru, the film is a collaborative vision conceived by Prasanth Varma, who previously delivered the breakout hit HanuMan.
The film is still in its early stages, with casting and production logistics being actively fine-tuned. “Prasanth is particular about who he wants to cast as the lead because this will be his first female superhero, and it requires a certain charm while challenging beauty standards. Hopefully, all details will be ironed out soon, and the film will officially be rolled out,” a source added.
The Vision Behind the Universe
The Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe, initiated with HanuMan starring Teja Sajja, took audiences by storm with its mythologically inspired world-building. It reimagined Lord Hanuman in a contemporary superhero context, earning critical and commercial acclaim. A sequel, Jai Hanuman, featuring Rishab Shetty, is currently in the pipeline.
Now, Mahakali is set to expand this rich, interconnected universe. Drawing inspiration from Goddess Kali, the narrative is expected to be emotionally resonant and visually arresting. Beyond Mahakali, the PVCU has already lined up other projects including Adhira, based on Lord Indra with Dasari Kalyan, and an untitled venture starring Mokshagna Teja.
Breaking Beauty Standards in Casting
In an earlier conversation with Hindustan Times, Prasanth Varma shared his perspective on casting for Mahakali. “Casting a big star to play Mahakali is no longer challenging, but that’s not the point. When the film is being made to challenge beauty standards, I want to ensure we do our bit not to propagate it, too.”
This comment underscores the filmmaker’s intent to create a universe where substance trumps superficiality and where heroism is measured by courage and conviction, not conventional appeal.
