PSV Eindhoven defeated Ajax 2-1 to lift the 2022 KNVB Cup, turning around the opening goal scored by Ryan Gravenberch to win the game. Erick Gutierrez scored the equaliser for PSV before talented youngster Cody Gakpo put his side ahead five minutes into the second half.
Despite having less of the ball with them, PSV held on until the final whistle to win the KNVB Cup and deny their rivals the chance to win another domestic double.
Erik Ten Hag makes questionable decisions as Ajax lose Cup final
The Ajax manager made some interesting calls as he came up short in the Cup final against PSV Eindhoven. Firstly, Andre Onana was dropped from the squad completely due to alleged fitness issues. Moreover, Sebastian Haller, the top goalscorer for the team, was dropped in favour of Brian Brobbey, who is yet to prove himself.
Ten Hag was his usual calm self on the touchline as his side suffered a defeat from a winning position. He was in no mood to answer questions about his future following the game.
‘I think this is the time to end the press conference,’ said the Ajax boss when the subject was raised. ‘I will need 24 hours to recover from this.’
While Ajax’s chances of securing another domestic double under Erik Ten Hag have been put to rest, they are in pole position to win the Eredivisie title for yet another year. And though PSV are close behind, they have strong chances of securing the top spot.
