Apple will launch a second generation of its AirTag item tracker in 2025 with a drastically improved item tracking function, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims. The upcoming AirTag will use an upgraded version (the second generation) of Apple’s UWB chip, or something similar, initially seen in the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. The next generation of AirTags may have one of these new chips, which would deliver double or triple the range of the Ultra Wideband chip in this generation, increasing tracking accuracy significantly.

AirTag 2 to Launch in 2025 with Major Range Boost for Item Tracking, New Ultra Wideband Chip
According to Gurman, the new AirTag would also probably have a tracking range of up to 60 meters (around 200 feet), the same as the Precision Finding feature found on iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models. This functionality assists the user in finding friends and devices in public spaces that are crowded or busy, and the broader range presented on the new AirTag will help even develop its ability to track objects in larger spaces. This may be a handy enhancement for users who rely on AirTags to monitor their possessions over a much bigger range.
In addition to the extended range, the second-gen AirTag would also likely have better anti-stalking functionality, particularly in relation to the built-in speaker. Also getting made less accessible is the speaker, in response to stalker concerns, according to Gurman. While those safety features will be enhanced, Gurman doesn’t predict any major design changes will come to the next AirTag.
The original AirTag was launched in April 2021, so the second-gen model will turn up roughly four years later. According to Gurman, we can expect this new version of the AirTag to be released around the middle of 2025, giving consumers an upgrade in utility while retaining the look of the existing design.
