Why Ahmedabad Beat the Competition

Commonwealth Sport President Dr. Donald Rukare praised India for bringing scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, and enormous sporting passion to the centenary Games. The decision wasn’t just about infrastructure—it was about India’s compelling vision for revitalizing a multi-sport event that has struggled to find willing hosts recently.

Ahmedabad competed against Nigeria’s Abuja, but Commonwealth Sport opted to consider the African nation for the 2034 edition instead. The Indian city’s decade-long infrastructure development, including the world’s largest cricket stadium and the ₹825 crore Naranpura Sports Complex, proved decisive.

From Cricket Stadium to Global Sports Hub

Ahmedabad isn’t starting from scratch. The city recently hosted the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, Asian Aquatics Championships, and AFC U17 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers. Next year brings the Asian Weightlifting Championship and Asia Para-Archery Cup, with the 2029 World Police and Fire Games scheduled across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave is under development and will house an aquatics center, football stadium, and two indoor sports arenas alongside the already iconic Narendra Modi Stadium.

The Sports Program: Bigger Than Glasgow 2026

While the 2026 Glasgow Games feature just 10 sports due to budget constraints, Ahmedabad 2030 will showcase 15 to 17 disciplines. Confirmed sports include athletics, para athletics, swimming, para swimming, table tennis, para table tennis, bowls, para bowls, weightlifting, para powerlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball, and boxing.

Sports under consideration include archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, cricket T20, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, triathlon, and wrestling. The Indian Olympic Association pushed for this expanded program, contrasting sharply with Glasgow’s scaled-down approach.

India’s Olympic Ambitions Get a Boost

This isn’t just about the Commonwealth Games. The decision bolsters India’s ambition to become an Olympic host in 2036, with Ahmedabad positioned as the focal city. Successfully hosting the centenary edition will showcase India’s organizational capabilities and sporting infrastructure development to the International Olympic Committee.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the win, stating that India’s collective commitment has firmly placed the nation on the global sporting map. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya called it a “historic day” and emphasized India’s track record hosting world-class events like the Boxing World Cup, Hockey World Cup, and World Para Athletics Championships.

Learning from Delhi 2010

India spent close to ₹70,000 crore on the 2010 Delhi Games, far exceeding the initial estimate of ₹1,600 crore. The 2030 edition aims to leverage existing infrastructure and avoid the cost overruns and controversies that plagued Delhi.

IOA President PT Usha expressed that the 2030 Games will celebrate 100 years of the Commonwealth Movement while laying the foundation for the next century, bringing together athletes, communities, and cultures in friendship and progress.

The countdown to October 2030 has begun, and with it comes India’s opportunity to demonstrate that it’s ready to join the elite club of nations capable of hosting mega sporting events with excellence and efficiency.
