India will face Australia in their opening game of the AFC Asian Cup 2023. The Blue Tigers have faced the Socceroos eight times, and are on the wrong end of the head to head record. They have won against the 2015 AFC Asian Cup winners only twice, with Australia winning five times and only one draw between them.

Their most recent encounter was in the AFC Asian Cup 2011, when India were handed a massive 4-0 defeat. It was their first time back in the tournament after 27 years, and a heroic performance from Subrata Paul prevented the scoreline from being any worse.

India’s last win against Australia was all the way back in 1956, when they were going through their Golden Generation. Their 7-1 win was a result of a rematch demanded by their opponents after India’s 4-2 win at the 1956 Olympics.

India will be expected to make it out of their group this year at the Asian Cup. But, they have a tough challenge with games against Uzbekistan and Syria to follow after Australia.

After winning the SAFF Championship and Intercontinental title earlier in 2023, Igor Stimac’s men have some wins to show for themselves in spite of an unsuccessful performance at the 2023 Asian Games in China.

But having played the FIFA World Cup last year, Australia will be heading into the game as the clear favourites to win their ninth match against one another.
