Japan were stunned by Iraq at the AFC Asian Cup 2023, succumbing to a 2-1 defeat in their group stage fixture. A first half brace from Aymen Hussein was enough to seal the win for the Mesopotamian Lions, in spite of the late comeback by the Japanese. Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo scored in the third minute of injury time to pull one back for his side.
But, it was too little, too late for Japan to pull off a comeback after being 2-0 down at half time. With the win, Iraq qualified for the Round of 16, registering two wins from two games so far in the tournament. On the other hand, Japan will need to win against Indonesia in their third and final group stage game to ensure that they make it out of their group.
Iraq stun Japan to seal Round of 16 spot at AFC Asian Cup
Japan walked into the game with an 11-match winning streak, and were favourites to earn all three points comfortably. They are currently ranked 17th in the world, while Iraq are 63rd. And by all standards, this was a massive upset for one of the favourites to win the tournament.
Iraq’s win over Japan is historic since it is the first time in over 40 years that they have beaten the Samurai Blue. And in doing so, they will be marching into the knockout stages with confidence and determination to proceed even further.
The final matchday will see Iraq face Vietnam with nothing but pride to play for. On the other hand, Japan will have a lot at stake against Indonesia.
