West Bengal’s Abhimanyu Easwaran has been selected in Team India’s squad bound to fly for the 2021 World Test Championship in England. India will be playing New Zealand in August this year.
After being ignored by IPL sides not bidding for him, the 25-year-old batsman was dejected but was seemingly happy on the national team call up, since he claims that he was expecting to make the cut sooner or later. Although Abhimanyu is named as a standby player for the tour, he has expressed his plan to be optimally prepared if the chance arrives.
After being a regular player for the India A squad, Abhimanyu has bagged 2875 runs in 62 matches so far with a 48.72 average, also scoring 4401 runs in 64 matches of First-Class cricket with an impressive average of 43.57. He rose up to popularity when he scored 861 runs in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy.
In an interview, he stated that he would be getting back to play with the red ball for the first time this season after only playing with white-ball cricket this season. He also conveyed that in his attempts to push himself to the limit in the process of WTC preparation, he has been adjusting his training schedule since he wishes to make the best efforts in order to get on the positive curve. With this being his second outing with the senior team, after he was a reserve for the 2020-21 England Tests, he hopes that this will be a good opportunity to showcase his performances, which could fetch him IPL selection.
The Dehradun-born cricketer hopes that he will soon be playing IPL cricket if proceedings go well. The squad consists of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Jaspreet Bumrah, and the likes. KL Rahul and Wriddhiman Saha are also a part of the team but are subject to fitness clearance. Abhimanyu’s standby partners include Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, and Arzan Nagwaswalla.
