Sergio Ramos, the legendary Spanish footballer, announced his retirement from international football on Thursday, 24 February 2023. The 36-year-old, who had represented Spain since 2005, is the most capped player in the history of Spain’s football team, with 180 appearances. He was also a part of the squads that won the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and the UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

  1. Most Capped Player in Spanish Football Team : Sergio Ramos made his international debut for Spain at the age of 18 in 2005. He went on to become Spain’s youngest player to ever reach 100 caps in 2013. He currently holds the record as the most capped player in the history of Spain’s football team with 180 appearances, surpassing the previous record holder, Iker Casillas.
  2. Record Holder for Most International Victories : Sergio Ramos holds the record for most international victories for Spain with 131 wins. He also holds the record for most appearances as a captain of the Spanish National Team.
  3. Represented Spain at Four World Cups and Three European Championships : Sergio Ramos represented Spain at four FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018) and three UEFA European Championships (2008, 2012, and 2016). He won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and back-to-back UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
  4. Individual Honours : Ramos was named to the FIFA World Cup Dream Team in 2010 and the UEFA Euro Team of the Tournament in 2012. He was also a part of the FIFPro World XI six times (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015).
  5. Ramos’ Retirement : After an illustrious international career spanning nearly 18 years, Ramos announced his retirement from international football. The centre-back wanted to thank supporters “from the bottom of my heart.” He was part of the Spain team that won their first-ever World Cup trophy in 2010, which was sandwiched between two European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012.
  6. Ramos’ Contribution to Spanish Football : Sergio Ramos has been one of the most crucial players in the history of Spanish football. He played a significant role in Spain’s international success and was instrumental in Real Madrid’s triumphs in the UEFA Champions League. He is widely regarded as one of the best defenders of his generation.
