India is making Olympic history! Ahmedabad emerges as the frontrunner for India’s official 2036 Olympic Games bid, marking what could be the nation’s first-ever hosting of the Summer Olympics. This ambitious project represents “the age-old dream of 140 crore (1.4 billion)” Indians coming to fruition.

India’s Olympic Vision Becomes Reality

India delivered its letter of intent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on October 1, officially entering the race to host the 2036 Olympics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi endorsed these ambitions during the IOC’s annual meeting in Mumbai in October 2023, promising India will leave no stone unturned in organizing the Games.

While Ahmedabad remains the centre of India’s bid, the government is exploring hosting events across multiple cities, creating a nationwide Olympic movement. This multi-city approach could include hockey in Bhubaneswar, rowing in Bhopal, and canoeing in Pune.

Revolutionary Sports Inclusion Planned

The campaign is pushing to add yoga, chess, and squash along with traditional Indian sports like kho kho and kabaddi to the 2036 program. This cultural integration could transform the Olympic landscape, showcasing India’s rich sporting heritage on the world’s biggest stage.

Ahmedabad already boasts world-class infrastructure, including the world’s largest cricket stadium – Narendra Modi Stadium. The city’s commitment extends to infrastructure development, with plans for metro rail extensions to support the Olympic bid.

Historic Opportunity for Indian Sports

If selected, this would be India’s first time hosting the Summer Olympics, positioning the nation as a global sporting powerhouse. A decision on the 2036 Olympics host should be taken “not before 2026 or 2027” according to IOC officials.

The bid represents more than sporting achievement – it’s about national pride and global recognition. With double-digit interested parties competing, India’s diverse cultural offerings and massive population make it a compelling candidate.
