Gearbox Software has confirmed that Borderlands 4 will release two weeks earlier than initially planned, on September 12th, instead of September 23rd. Randy Pitchford, Gearbox CEO, dropped the bomb in a now-deleted video that was re-uploaded on X by Wario64.
Pitchford reveals in a video that the game is doing extremely well in development and that the earlier release date is happening because production has been “awesome”. This is a sign that the folks at Gearbox have been able to polish the game more quickly than had been anticipated.

Borderlands 4 to Launch Two Weeks Early on September 12th, State of Play Presentation Coming Soon
In addition to announcing the delayed release date, Pitchford also touched on the fact that he expects a State of Play presentation for Borderlands 4 will be coming “imminently.” This will presumably be coming soon with more details about the game and more footage. In reality, the State of Play presentation takes place later today, April 30th, at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm BST, but we will get some fresh gameplay footage and learn more about this upcoming title.
Borderlands fans may be excited by this news of an early release, but it is significant to the gaming industry as a whole, including for Grand Theft Auto VI. The publisher of both games, Take-Two Interactive, has previously hinted that GTA VI would release after Borderlands 4. Clearly, then, the rescheduling confirms that the Borderlands 4 release date was delayed in response to the hotly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, releasing in Fall 2024.
As a result, fans may also be in store for a new trailer for GTA VI in the near future. Some former Rockstar Games developers believe that keeping the game’s details under wraps until launch could make it even more successful, adding an element of surprise. Borderlands 4 will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S when it releases on September 12th, offering fans a much-anticipated new chapter in the franchise.
