According to a report, Amazon’s new Vega TV OS could be launched on a TV streaming device later this year. The company hopes to drop the Google Android OS and replace it with Vega OS, based on Linux. According to the report, Amazon is already in discussions with streaming platforms to complete the app ecosystem needed for the new system, and is also looking for developers to help build the Vega TV OS. Reports early on indicated the OS could also replace Android on things like smart speakers, displays, and in-car entertainment systems.

Amazon’s Vega TV OS Expected to Launch on Streaming Device in 2025, Replacing Fire OS

Amazon is working on Vega TV OS for future devices, as revealed in the latest edition of Janko Roettgers’ Lowpass newsletter. Amazon plans to launch the first TV streaming device with its Vega OS later this year, according to people briefed on the company’s plans. Amazon’s TV streaming devices and smart TVs run Fire OS, which is based on Android. While Vega is set to replace Fire OS for future Amazon products, the upcoming Vega TV OS is said to build upon the core of Linux.

Like LG’s webOS TV, Vega OS will probably have access to multiple streaming services. And we were expecting the new OS would have been for a streaming adapter — like the Amazon Fire Stick — putting its release at the end of 2024. But new developer guidance from Amazon suggested that the company was also developing an Android 14-based version of Fire OS.

Roettgers discovered two now-deleted job listings on Amazon’s website for roles related to Vega OS development, further confirming that the company is pushing forward with this project. Amazon has also reportedly approached multiple streaming platforms to ensure that their apps will be available on Vega OS, which is crucial for its success. Although Amazon hasn’t officially announced the launch of Vega OS, these developments suggest it could debut on a streaming device later this year, potentially replacing Fire OS in the future.
