Huawei has faced multiple hurdles in its efforts to mass-produce its first ARM-based PC chipset, but the company appears to be making significant progress. Huawei now aims to lessen its dependence on Intel and Microsoft and plans to develop its first home-grown answer for a diverse range of devices.

Previous reports suggested that this custom SoC would feature Kunpeng-920 cores and integrate DeepSeek technology. Now, according to a new leak, the chipset will be branded as the X90, however, it remains unclear about the chipset specifications or the launch timeline.

Huawei X90 ARM-Based PC Chipset Tipped for Q1 2025 Launch, May Rely on SMIC’s 7nm Process

Previous rumors speculated Huawei’s ARM-based PC chipset was due to happen last year, but this latest rumor proposes the X90 could arrive in Q1 2025. Enthusiast tipster @Jukkanlosev recently posted a picture of several chips developed by Huawei, one of which happens to be the company’s debut-found ARM PC processor for standard use. But U.S. trade restrictions remain a problem, preventing Huawei from the latest in semiconductor technology.

This constraint is evident in the Kirin 9020, which powers the Mate 70 series and still relies on SMIC’s 7nm process. China has been forced to speed up with its development of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines due to the current restrictions, the semiconductor machines that are designed to make chips, to rely less on a Dutch company that is subject to U.S. regulations, called ASML, the report claimed. Assuming the company launches the X90 in this quarter, it’s likely to use the same 7nm manufacturing process — which may make it less powerful than Apple’s M4 series or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus.

Despite this, Huawei could compensate with its HarmonyOS NEXT, which is designed to be more resource-efficient than Android. This efficiency suggests that even with the X90’s limited processing capabilities, Huawei’s desktops and laptops should still perform smoothly. Additionally, the company is expected to adopt a unified RAM architecture, similar to Apple’s M-series chips. While this approach prevents memory upgrades, it enhances bandwidth and overall system efficiency.
