Delhi Capitals Women vs Mumbai Indians Women: Preview

Is it déjà vu from 2023? Once again, MI and DC—two of the most consistent teams with star-studded line-ups—face off in the WPL final. While DC cruised into the summit clash, MI have had a tougher path, battling through three matches in four days to earn their spot.

In a repeat of the inaugural season’s title clash, a directly-qualified Delhi Capitals will once again face home side Mumbai Indians at the Brabourne Stadium on Saturday (March 15), aiming to break their final curse and secure the franchise’s first-ever championship across all competitions.

DC have excelled across departments, making smart selection calls throughout the season. Captain Meg Lanning found her rhythm late in the tournament, Shafali Verma has been a steady run-scorer at the top, and promoting Jess Jonassen to No. 3 has proven to be a masterstroke. However, for DC to appear even more formidable, their middle order needs to step up. Batters from positions 4 to 7 have collectively averaged 17.50—the lowest this season—while striking at 116.66, the second-lowest among all teams.

Meg Lanning

Since wrapping up their group-stage fixtures in Lucknow, DC have had a seven-day break before heading into the all-important final. While this has allowed them to rest and prepare, there are concerns about potential rustiness. However, skipper Meg Lanning remains unfazed. “We have got lots of energy within the group, and I am really excited about the opportunity we have given ourselves to go out there and play our best game,” she said on the eve of the final. “We’ve been watching the games on TV, trained here, and many of our players have experience at this venue, so conditions won’t be an issue. Like any match, we just need to assess and adapt accordingly tomorrow night.”

DC can also take confidence from their performances against MI this season, having won both league-stage encounters in contrasting fashions. Their dramatic last-ball, one-wicket victory in the tournament opener in Vadodara may not have been the most convincing, but their dominant, near-flawless triumph in Bengaluru showcased a side peaking at the right time. Meg Lanning’s team also holds a slight 4-3 edge in head-to-head matchups, though MI still claim the upper hand from their 2023 WPL final win.

MI, meanwhile, have endured a grueling schedule, playing three matches in four days—including a do-or-die Eliminator—seemingly operating on autopilot. While this intense run raises concerns about fatigue, they are banking on their familiarity with the conditions at the CCI. “In a way, it’s an advantage because we know the conditions really well,” Harmanpreet Kaur said on Friday. “Playing three games in four days has given us insight into where to bowl, how to approach our batting, and when to accelerate or hold back. We’ve learned a lot—how to bat, how to bowl—and we’ve seen improvement with each game.”

Harmanpreet Kaur

While DC’s powerplay bowling has been a major strength, MI have outperformed them in this phase. DC’s bowlers have claimed 50 wickets at 23.84, but MI have gone a step further, picking up 61 wickets at 22.68. For MI, Nat Sciver-Brunt has been in destructive form, Hayley Matthews has excelled with both bat and ball, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur has maintained a high tempo. However, the rest of their line-up has been inconsistent.

MI also hold the advantage of playing at their home ground, where they have lost just once in seven matches this season. More importantly, they will be eager to erase the heartbreak of last year’s Eliminator, where a batting collapse denied them the chance to defend their title. On the other hand, DC, having reached their third consecutive final without taking the Eliminator route, will be determined to finally seize the elusive trophy that has slipped through their grasp twice before.

Delhi Capitals Women vs Mumbai Indians Women: Pitch Report

In WPL 2025, the Brabourne Stadium has hosted three matches, with an average first-innings score of 197. Interestingly, all three games have been won by the team setting a target. While chasing has been the preferred strategy throughout the tournament, posting a competitive total could be a smart approach in a high-pressure final.

A fresh, batting-friendly surface is expected, which may later offer some assistance to slower bowlers. Despite the impact of dew, teams batting first have prevailed each time, with first-innings totals spanning different score ranges. Notably, after the Eliminator, MI acknowledged that batting first on a new pitch worked in their favor—something that could hold true for the final as well.

Mumbai Indians Women – Team News

MI experimented with Amelia Kerr as an opener while pushing Yastika Bhatia down the order for a couple of matches. While Yastika adapted well to her new role, scoring briskly, Kerr struggled to convert her starts. The original batting order was reinstated in the Eliminator against Gujarat Giants, but neither player made a significant impact. Will MI reconsider the shuffle to maximize Yastika’s effectiveness?

In the bowling department, Saika Ishaque replaced Parunika Sisodia for the Eliminator but bowled just one over. With Harmanpreet Kaur content with Yastika’s role at the top, the batting order is likely to remain unchanged. However, MI might opt to bring back Sisodia, potentially sidelining Ishaque for the final.

Delhi Capitals Women vs Mumbai Indians Women: Players To Watch Out For

Jemimah Rodrigues (Delhi Capitals Women)

Jemimah Rodrigues has had a tough season with the bat, managing just one half-century—scored in a losing cause—across six innings, including three single-digit scores and a duck. With Jess Jonassen excelling in the top order, Rodrigues has shifted to No. 4 but has yet to make a significant impact.

Jemimah Rodrigues

She’ll be eager to step up on home turf in the tournament’s biggest game. However, her fielding has remained consistently impressive throughout the season.

Hayley Matthews (Mumbai Indians Women)

Hayley Matthews rediscovered her batting form in the Eliminator, but it’s her bowling that has been the real highlight of her campaign. Leading the wicket charts with 17 scalps at an average of 15.88, she has been effective across all phases of the tournament, as showcased in the Eliminator. In the 2023 final at Brabourne Stadium, Matthews delivered a sensational spell of 3 for 5 in four overs, including the key wicket of Jonassen, playing a pivotal role in MI’s title triumph.
