Mukherjee belonged to the renowned Samarth-Mukherjee family. He was the father-in-law of filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker and the uncle of Bollywood stars Kajol and Rani Mukerji.
His mother, Satidevi, was the only sister of legendary actors Ashok Kumar and Anup Kumar and singer Kishore Kumar. He was also the brother of acclaimed actor-director Joy Mukherjee and filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee, who was married to actress Tanuja, making him the uncle of Kajol.
Mukherjee was married twice. From his first marriage, he had a daughter, Sunita, who is married to director Gowariker, while his son, Ayan, was born from his second marriage.
