The Electric State OTT Release Date: Netflix has dropped the final trailer for The Electric State, giving audiences a closer look at the sci-fi adventure before its March release. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, this highly anticipated film is set in a retro-futuristic version of the 1990s and stars Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.

This is one of the biggest releases Netflix is backing this year, with more promotion than most of their usual films. While they aren’t pushing it as aggressively as Rebel Moon, the marketing effort is noticeably larger than what we’ve seen for other recent releases. With the final trailer now out, some fans have pointed out that it might reveal major plot points from the third act, so if you prefer avoiding spoilers, you may want to skip it.

The Electric State OTT Release Date

Netflix will exclusively premiere The Electric State on March 14, 2025. To watch it on release day, you’ll need a Netflix subscription.

Netflix has been pushing this film harder than many of its previous releases. Recently, the thriller Carry-On performed well despite minimal marketing, but with The Electric State, Netflix is making sure audiences know about it ahead of time.

The Electric State Cast

This film boasts an A-list cast featuring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. It also includes a blend of live-action performances and motion-captured robots, voiced by well-known actors.

Main Cast:

  • Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things, Enola Holmes, Damsel) as Michelle, a teenage orphan on a mission to find her missing brother
  • Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World) as Keats, a smuggler who becomes Michelle’s reluctant ally
  • Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Dr. Amherst
  • Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) as Ted Finnster
  • Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) as Colonel Bradbury
  • Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games, Conclave) as Ethan Skate
  • Woody Norman (The Last Voyage of the Demeter) in a mystery role

Voice Cast (Robots & AI Characters):

  • Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Brave New World) as Herman, Keats’ sarcastic robot sidekick
  • Woody Harrelson (True Detective, Venom: Let There Be Carnage) as Mr. Peanut
  • Brian Cox (Succession) as Pop Fly
  • Jenny Slate (It Ends With Us) as Penny Pal
  • Alan Tudyk (Resident Alien, Rogue One) as Cosmo, the sweet but mysterious robot that Michelle encounters

The Electric State Plot

The movie is based on Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel, with the screenplay adapted by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (writers of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame).

The official Netflix synopsis reads:

“Set in the aftermath of a robot uprising in an alternate version of the ’90s, The Electric State follows an orphaned teenager who ventures across the American West with a cartoon-inspired robot, a smuggler, and his sidekick in search of her younger brother.”

Millie Bobby Brown plays Michelle, a teenage girl navigating a world where sentient robots once lived peacefully among humans but are now exiled after a failed uprising. One night, a mysterious robot named Cosmo appears and seems to be controlled by her younger brother, Christopher, a brilliant inventor whom she thought was dead.

Determined to find Christopher, Michelle embarks on a dangerous journey across the American Southwest. Along the way, she teams up with Keats (Chris Pratt), a low-level smuggler, and his robotic sidekick, Herman (Anthony Mackie). Their adventure takes them to the Exclusion Zone, a desolate desert where robots now live in secret.

As Michelle and Keats make their way through this walled-off territory, they encounter a group of bizarre animatronic allies. But the closer Michelle gets to finding Christopher, the more she realizes that dark forces are working to keep them apart. The people behind Christopher’s disappearance are far more sinister and powerful than she ever imagined.

How The Electric State Came to Life

Anthony and Joe Russo are known for directing some of the biggest films of all time, including Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. For The Electric State, they blended CGI and motion capture technology to bring the film’s world to life.

Producer Angela Russo-Otstot revealed in an interview with Netflix’s blog Tudum:

“There is more CGI animation happening than Anthony and Joe did on their biggest films at Marvel.”

That’s a huge statement, considering Endgame had some of the most advanced visual effects ever seen in cinema.

Much of the film was shot in Atlanta, a major hub for Hollywood productions. Netflix worked alongside AGBO (the Russo Brothers’ production company), Anthem & Song, Double Dream, and Skybound Entertainment to produce the movie.

The Russo Brothers’ Filmography

The Russo brothers have built an impressive resume over the years. Here’s a look at their filmography leading up to The Electric State:

  • Pieces (1997)
  • Welcome to Collinwood (2002)
  • You, Me and Dupree (2006)
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
  • Avengers: Endgame (2019)
  • Cherry (2021)
  • The Gray Man (2022)
  • The Electric State (2025)

From The Winter Soldier to Endgame, the Russos have consistently delivered high-stakes, action-packed stories. With The Electric State, they’re stepping away from the superhero genre and diving into sci-fi adventure.
