Lionel Messi Opens Up About Unhappy PSG Stint: “I Wasn’t Happy on a Daily Basis”

Lionel Messi has revealed that he “didn’t enjoy” his time at Paris Saint-Germain, shedding light on the challenges he faced during his two-year stay in the French capital. The Argentine maestro, who moved to PSG in 2021 after an emotional departure from Barcelona, struggled to adapt and admitted that he was far from content during his stint at the club.

After scoring 32 goals and providing 35 assists in 76 appearances for PSG, Messi made the switch to Major League Soccer (MLS), joining Inter Miami, a team co-owned by David Beckham. Speaking in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner reflected on his turbulent years in Paris and the fresh start he has found in the United States.

A Sudden Exit and Tough Adaptation

Messi’s move to PSG was unexpected, a result of Barcelona’s financial troubles that left them unable to renew his contract. Despite the French club’s star-studded squad, which included Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, the transition was anything but smooth for the legendary forward.

Coming to play for Inter Miami was an opportunity and the way things developed during my last years in Paris, although it was a decision that I had to make on the go, because I had to leave from Barcelona, I went through two years which I didn’t enjoy,” Messi said.

The Argentine playmaker acknowledged that adapting to PSG’s system and life in a new city was not easy. “I wasn’t happy on a daily basis, with the training, the matches. I had a hard time adapting to all that,” he admitted.

A Strained Relationship With PSG Fans

Messi’s tenure at PSG also saw growing tensions between him and the club’s supporters. Although he played a key role in helping PSG secure two Ligue 1 titles, his relationship with fans became strained. A section of the supporters expressed their dissatisfaction by booing him during matches, particularly after the team’s early elimination from the Champions League.

At the time of his departure, Messi reflected on the fractured connection with the fans, stating that a “significant” number of them began treating him differently. Despite his contributions on the field, he felt that appreciation for his efforts had faded.

PSG Chairman’s Criticism

Adding to the controversy, PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi criticized Messi for lacking “respect” towards the club after his exit. While the Argentine refrained from responding directly to the remarks, it was evident that the fallout from his departure left behind unresolved tensions.

For Messi, however, the focus remained on moving forward. His decision to join Inter Miami was not just about football but also about rediscovering the joy of the game.

A New Beginning in Inter Miami

Since arriving in the United States, Messi has embraced his role as the face of MLS, both on and off the pitch. His impact has been immediate, with 36 goals and 20 assists in just 42 appearances, proving that he remains one of the most influential players in world football.

Unlike his time in Paris, Messi feels at home in Miami. “I felt called to come to Inter [Miami] because it’s a club that’s growing, very new, with few years as a club,” he said. His presence has not only elevated the team but also significantly boosted MLS’s global visibility.

Looking Ahead to the Club World Cup

One of the upcoming challenges Messi is eagerly anticipating is the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which will be hosted in Miami. With elite clubs like PSG, Manchester City, and Chelsea set to participate, the tournament will provide a grand stage for MLS teams to compete against Europe’s best.

I think this is very important for the club, especially, to participate for the first time in a World Cup that will take place in the country and for the MLS to have two teams is a wonderful thing,” Messi remarked.

He believes that the tournament will be a milestone moment for MLS, helping the league continue its evolution. “Everything that’s happening creates an opportunity for the MLS to keep growing in football, as a league. And for other players to have the opportunity to come and keep growing.”
