Google announced Android XR, a new operating system designed specifically for extended reality (AR) devices and powered by AI features and mixed reality (MR) experiences. Next-generation mixed reality headsets from Microsoft and smart glasses are naturally supported, along with embedded AI, AR, and VR capabilities. Apple had previously unveiled visionOS in 2023 for the Apple Vision Pro, which enables apps designed for the headset, along with compatibility for iPad apps.

To help them on their XR journeys, Android XR will come with Google’s Gemini AI assistant, so customers can speak with the assistant in the middle of the action. That includes features like asking the assistant questions about things and places in view or using the “Circle to Search” feature for visual lookups with a gesture, found on some Android phones.

Not only the AI integration, but Google will also optimize its native apps like YouTube, Google Photos, and Google TV to work on virtual displays, similar to Apple’s immersive screen experience provided by the Vision Pro. You’ll also be able to access an upgraded Immersive View with Google Maps and browse the web on Google Chrome with massive virtual screens using gesture-based navigation.

The first device that will run this new OS is the Samsung-led Project Moohan, an XR headset scheduled for release in 2025. In select markets, this will compete with the Apple Vision Pro, which starts at $3,499 (roughly ₹2.96 lakh). Smart glasses, seen as the future of XR technology, may offer similar features without bulky components. Google is already readying Android XR for these devices, though soon it will start real-world testing with prototype glasses using the new OS.
