Kraven the Hunter: Sony Drops First 8 Minutes Ahead of Release

Sony Pictures is foregoing a final trailer for the release of Kraven the Hunter in just two short weeks and instead dropped the opening 8 minutes of the movie. This less orthodox maneuver is usually saved for big studio tentpole releases when they debut in the digital sphere. Featuring tons of violence and suspense, the first look is an action-packed, R-rated story.

Kraven the Hunter: Sony Releases First 8 Minutes Ahead of December 13 Premiere

Plot Sneak Peek

The trailer begins with Kraven (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) being transported to jail, where he uses his superhuman powers to take out a handful of gangsters. But this earlier scene as an escape is important because it hammers home for the audience just how powerful that character actually is, and establishes what question we likebrutal to see answered. This was his whole power set in miniature. The sequence ends with a big twist, as it also reveals Kraven has killed another prisoner and is taking his place. But the reason for copying one of their neck tattoos still seems random.

A Bold Strategy by Sony

Sony releasing this extended clip has stirred up no small amount of controversy. Given that previous Sony adaptations of Marvel properties (like Morbius and Madame Web), have received lukewarm responses overall, many are wondering if this is a desperate move to drum up buzz or a calculated maneuver in an attempt to win fans over while we await the first trailer. Early box office projections point toward the film’s potentially faltering opening weekend, but as mentioned above, time will tell.
