I-League Clubs Accuse AIFF of Gross Mismanagement Amid Broadcast Crisis

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is facing mounting allegations from I-League clubs over a range of issues that have jeopardized the league’s future.

At a press conference on Saturday, the I-League Clubs Association (ILCA) leveled serious accusations of poor decision-making and a lack of transparency, placing Indian football’s reputation on the line. From broadcast issues to concerns over player development, these allegations suggest the AIFF’s handling of I-League matters has left clubs and players in disarray.

I-League Clubs Claim AIFF’s Failure to Respond to Concerns

The ILCA has accused the AIFF of ignoring repeated attempts by I-League clubs to discuss key issues about the league’s future. During the meeting, representatives from all 12 I-League clubs voiced their frustration over the AIFF’s unresponsiveness. According to the clubs, they have reached out multiple times without receiving any clear answers regarding the AIFF’s plans for the competition.

One of the major concerns highlighted by the ILCA was the AIFF’s lack of transparency regarding decisions affecting the league’s structure and direction. The clubs believe that this opacity is putting the future of Indian football at risk, leaving stakeholders uncertain about the next steps.

Restrictions on U-19 Players Threaten Youth Development

In addition to concerns over communication, the I-League clubs raised alarms about the AIFF’s decision to prohibit U-19 players from being part of I-League squads. The AIFF’s reasoning was that allowing such players would lead to “bloated squads.” However, the ILCA argues that this decision severely hampers youth development in Indian football, as it reduces the opportunity for young players to gain valuable experience in competitive environments.

The move also contradicts the federation’s stated goals of fostering grassroots football talent and preparing young athletes for higher levels of competition, including the Indian Super League (ISL) and the national team.

Broadcast Crisis: The Most Damaging Allegation

Among the many grievances, the most serious concern raised by the ILCA is the AIFF’s mishandling of the I-League’s broadcast rights. The clubs have accused the AIFF of failing to engage in meaningful discussions about broadcasting the league, despite the fact that the association sent four separate requests to the federation. These attempts, however, were ignored by the AIFF.

Sony, a major Indian broadcaster, reportedly expressed interest in covering the I-League and even sent several emails to the AIFF requesting fixture lists for promotional planning. Unfortunately, these communications were also left unanswered, leading to further frustration from the clubs.

The Controversial SSEN Broadcast Deal

Things took a more alarming turn when it was revealed that the AIFF had awarded the I-League’s broadcast rights to a Kolkata-based company, SSEN, through a closed tender process. The ILCA claims that the deal was finalized without consulting the clubs and without transparency, raising questions about its legality. SSEN, which has little to no experience in streaming football matches, is seen as an unreliable partner for broadcasting a professional football league.

This move has left the I-League with no solid broadcast plan and has created a great deal of uncertainty about how the league will be presented to fans, both domestically and internationally. The lack of a proper broadcasting arrangement has left clubs worried about the league’s viability, as many believe that widespread television coverage is essential for its growth and sustainability.

Financial Mismanagement and Player Uncertainty

Beyond the broadcasting issues, the I-League clubs have also raised concerns about financial mismanagement by the AIFF. Ranjit Bajaj, the owner of Delhi FC, pointed out a significant decline in the AIFF’s funds, from ₹22 crores in 2017 to a near-depleted state in 2024. The ILCA questions whether this financial decline is a result of mismanagement within the federation.

The financial instability is exacerbated by the AIFF’s failure to finalize the tender for the I-League’s broadcast rights, a move that further jeopardizes the league’s financial future. With the season fast approaching and no viable broadcasting solution in place, the I-League’s plans for the upcoming season are in limbo.

Calls for Immediate Action from AIFF

As the I-League season nears, the ILCA is calling for urgent action from the AIFF to address these issues and provide a clear path forward for the league. The clubs have demanded that the federation cooperate peacefully with all stakeholders to rectify the situation before it escalates further.

The ILCA argues that the AIFF’s current course of action not only threatens the survival of the I-League but also undermines the credibility of Indian football as a whole. If these allegations are not addressed, the future of the I-League and its players remains uncertain, and Indian football’s growth could suffer a major setback.

The AIFF is under immense pressure to respond to these serious allegations and ensure that the I-League receives the attention and resources it needs to flourish. The outcome of this ongoing controversy will be crucial in determining the trajectory of football in India for the years to come.
