Let’s have a look into more details : New Arjuna Lifetime Award

Dhyan Chand Lifetime Award Retired

Named in honor of Major Dhyan Chand, the Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award has been an esteemed part of India’s sporting legacy since 2002. Known for recognizing contributions across Olympic disciplines and other major games like the Asian and Commonwealth Games, it has been awarded to numerous sports icons. Last year, it was bestowed upon former athletes like shuttler Manjusha Kanwar, hockey player Vineet Kumar, and kabaddi player Kavitha Selvaraj for their lifetime contributions to Indian sports. With its retirement, the new Arjuna Award Lifetime is set to carry forward the torch of honoring lifelong dedication to sports in India.

The Introduction of the Arjuna Award Lifetime

The Arjuna Award Lifetime is a fresh approach, launched to streamline and “rationalize” the structure of India’s sporting honors. This award, focusing on lifetime contributions to sports development, is now positioned to not only recognize achievements on the field but also celebrate efforts that drive sports development and community building in India. The sports ministry’s official statement highlights this restructuring as a crucial step to modernize the awards system, ensuring recognition for both athletes and developers of the sports ecosystem.

Expanded Recognition in the Dronacharya Award

To elevate the importance of grassroots coaching, the Dronacharya Award has been extended to honor coaches working at the developmental level. This expansion is a critical change, as it recognizes the indispensable role that grassroots coaches play in fostering young talent across various sports. By focusing on developmental and grassroots level coaching, this adjustment aligns with the government’s broader agenda of promoting sports at all levels, starting with the foundation.

MAKA Trophy to Celebrate Khelo India Success

The Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy has also seen an important redefinition. Moving forward, this award will be presented to the university with the best overall performance in the Khelo India University Games. This change not only reflects the government’s commitment to the Khelo India initiative but also emphasizes the role of university-level competitions in fostering young athletic talent. Khelo India has become a pivotal scheme in nurturing young athletes across the country, and the MAKA Trophy is poised to underscore this mission at the university level.

Streamlining India’s Sports Honors: A Broader Perspective

With these new updates, the ministry aims to create a more unified and simplified awards framework. The changes resonate with the vision of modernizing Indian sports accolades, acknowledging that contributions at every level, from elite performance to grassroots coaching are vital for the country’s sporting future. This rationalized system reflects an approach that values both achievement and development, looking not only at the players who achieve success on the field but also at those who lay the groundwork behind the scenes.

Application Deadline for National Sports Awards 2024

The Ministry has announced that applications for the 2024 National Sports Awards must be submitted by November 14. This deadline is especially relevant for coaches and athletes aiming to secure recognition under the newly structured awards system.

By making these pivotal changes, the sports ministry is setting the stage for a future where sports development, achievement, and talent discovery are equally celebrated across all levels of Indian athletics.
