ARM-based laptops have gotten a lot of traction since Apple launched its M1 chip in 2020, healthily striking the best desktop CPUs with performance and unrivaled power efficiency.

Although Intel and AMD have attempted to uproot the x86 alternatives, market trends now clearly indicate that ARM notebooks are finally here for good—and they will continue their growth in this space. A research firm has predicted that ARM chipsets will be included in 40% of laptops by the end of the next decade, and this presents a huge hurdle for x86 processors.

More About the ARM Laptops Capturing Market

Qualcomm has also joined the ARM laptop space with its Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus processors. Based on those SoCs ARM expects to increase its market share, especially in Windows-based devices. Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm Today announced that notebooks with these SoCs will come out in 2025 and we may be able to see them priced as low as $700 making ARM hardware more accessible to the masses.

The future looks bright for ARM notebooks, as TechInsights predicts that by 2029, four out of ten laptops will run on ARM chips, signaling a major shift in the industry. That expansion should come at the hands of new entrants like MediaTek and NVIDIA, which are purportedly planning on launching AI-driven PCs employing TSMC’s 3nm process in late 2025. Huawei, though delayed by trade restrictions, also aims to release its custom ARM chip in 2025, further intensifying the competition.

This is where the ARM laptop market, initially propelled by Apple M1 which has demonstrated exceptional levels of performance-per-watt and battery life which for once enables ‘all-day computing’ is growing fast today. While their performance does not seem to hold back the overall score, ARM-based machines running Windows face issues with native applications optimization as well as gaming graphics.

The chip manufacturers will serve as a solution to these problems, and over time power efficient ARM adoption will increase competition for notebooks against x86 processors. This change is poised to make the laptop world a lot more interesting in years to come.
