Intel’s Panther Cove P-Core Architecture: Promising Major IPC Improvements and New Instruction Set Support

According to the report, Intel plans on bringing “major improvements” with its Panther Cove P-Core architecture that is supposed to succeed the Cougar Cove design. However, it appears from recent developments that Panther Cove will offer a more significant jump in IPC than its predecessors. Likewise, this structure will simulate Intel APX as well as AVX10 support.

More About the Intel Panther Cove P-Core Architecture

All this information has come via @InstaLatX64, who tweeted that someone on Realworldtech had revealed good IP improvements and a major performance uplift for Panther Cove. The fact that architectural progress from Cougar Cove to Panther Cove will be a “Tock” transition (i.e. more substantial than the previous “Tick” improvement from Lion Cove to Cougar Cove) was confirmed by user Stanislav.

We should note that this is Panther Cove and not to be confused with the in-development P-Core architecture Panther Lake which will offer the family of CPUs destined for mobile platforms. The new leak suggests that Panther Lake will follow the Intel Lunar Lake architecture and feature P-Cores designed by Cougar Cove. Panther Cove, on the other hand, targets desktops and supplants Intel’s Arrow Lake processors.

Additionally, a platform architecture dubbed Panther Cove X (for use with the upcoming Intel Diamond Rapids) will be built for Xeon processors. Both Panther Cove and Panther Cove X should bring a substantial IPC increase, with the Panther Cove X already being called out in the Diamond Rapids Linux 6.12 kernel patch. Originally, the successor to the Cougar Cove P-Core was rumored to be named Coyote Cove for the Core lineup. This architecture is anticipated to be featured in Nova Lake CPUs, with Intel confirming its commitment to increasing IPC in future designs.

In addition to its IPC improvements, Panther Cove will support Intel’s Advanced Performance Extensions (APX), an Instruction Set Architecture extension aimed at enhancing the performance and efficiency of x86 processors by increasing the number of General Purpose Registers to minimize memory access and reduce instruction latency.

The AVX10 extension is designed to enhance vectorized and floating-point processing, and Panther Cove may integrate both advancements into upcoming mainstream desktop and data center CPUs. While details on Panther Cove are still limited, this leak marks a significant development in Intel’s CPU progression.
