India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Day 1: Rain Halts Play, Bangladesh 107/3 at Stumps

India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Day 1: Day 1 of the second Test between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur saw rain playing the spoilsport, limiting action to just 35 overs. After being put into bat by India, Bangladesh ended the rain-curtailed day on 107/3, with Mominul Haque holding steady at 40* off 81 balls and Mushfiqur Rahim accompanying him on 6*.

Let’s have a look into more details: India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Day 1

Bangladesh Stumble, Akash Deep Strikes Early

The day began with a delayed start due to a wet outfield from overnight rain, pushing the toss back by an hour. Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl on a pitch that seemed to favor early movement for the seamers.

India’s bowlers wasted no time, and Akash Deep capitalized in just his second over by removing opener Zakir Hasan for a 24-ball duck. Zakir’s defensive edge was brilliantly caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal at third slip.

Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah tightened the screws, with Bumrah bowling a series of maidens to put Bangladesh under immense pressure. However, the Bangladeshi captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and former skipper Mominul Haque staged a mini-recovery, building a crucial partnership of 51 runs.

Deep returned to break this stand just after lunch, trapping Shanto LBW for 28 off 48 deliveries. Despite his review, the decision stood, leaving Bangladesh wobbling at 74/3.

Ashwin’s Record Milestone

Ravichandran Ashwin, brought into the attack early, contributed by dismissing Shanto and adding another feather to his illustrious cap. With this wicket, Ashwin surpassed the legendary Anil Kumble as the leading wicket taker for India in Test matches played in Asia, with a tally of 420 wickets.

Rain Disrupts Progress

The lunch break saw the drizzle begin, and only nine overs were bowled in the second session before the skies opened up. Mominul Haque continued his patient innings, guiding his side as India sought further breakthroughs. Mushfiqur Rahim joined Mominul after Shanto’s dismissal, and the pair managed to hold off the Indian bowlers until the rain intensified, forcing an early end to the day’s play.

The covers stayed on for the rest of the afternoon, and heavy rains eventually led to stumps being called, with Bangladesh at 107/3 in 35 overs.

The rain forecast for Days 2 and 3 casts a shadow over the match, with the weather expected to play a key role in the outcome of this contest. Play is set to resume half an hour early tomorrow, provided conditions allow it.
