England Opt to Bowl as Maxwell, Starc, Matthew Potts and Hazlewood Make Their Return for Australia

England chooses to bowl first as Maxwell, Starc, Matthew Potts, and Hazlewood return to strengthen Australia’s lineup in the second ODI

Australia has recalled three experienced players, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Potts, and Josh Hazlewood, for the second ODI at Headingley after they missed the opening game due to illness. England, opting to bowl first under cloudy conditions, made one change by bringing in Olly Stone to replace the rested Jofra Archer. Archer’s workload is being managed carefully throughout this series to ensure he remains fit for the rest of the competition.

“Usually Headingley has a bit in it early on, especially with overcast conditions,” England captain Harry Brook commented, hinting at the challenges the conditions might pose for Australia’s top order.

Australia, on the other hand, made a few changes to their lineup from the first ODI at Trent Bridge. Cameron Green, Sean Abbott, and Ben Dwarshuis have been left out. Dwarshuis sustained a pectoral muscle injury in the outfield during his ODI debut, limiting him to just four overs. Additionally, Josh Inglis remains unavailable due to a quad injury he picked up in the T20I series.

In this match, Australia has shifted their batting order with Matthew Short listed as the opener, moving captain Mitchell Marsh to No. 3. Australia will be aiming to continue their dominance from the first ODI, where their spinners triggered a dramatic collapse in England’s batting lineup. After a strong start, England went from 213 for 2 to being bowled out cheaply. Travis Head was the star of the show for Australia, hammering an unbeaten 154 to seal the victory.

England’s lineup for the second ODI remains largely unchanged, featuring Ben Duckett and Phil Salt at the top of the order, with Harry Brook leading the side. Their bowling attack will be led by Olly Stone, Adil Rashid, and Matthew Potts. Australia, meanwhile, boasts a formidable team with Travis Head opening alongside Matthew Short, and the dangerous Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa handling the bowling duties.
