Chandra Grahan 2024: Today Grahan Time and Where to Watch the Lunar Eclipse in India – Full Details Inside

Chandra Grahan 2024- Today Grahan Time

The upcoming lunar eclipse, known as Chandra Grahan, is set to occur on September 18, 2024, and will be visible across five continents. Unfortunately for skywatchers in India, the Moon will be below the horizon during the event, making the eclipse impossible to witness from the country. However, the eclipse still holds religious and cultural significance for many in India.

This celestial event will be the second lunar eclipse of 2024 and has captured the attention of astronomy enthusiasts around the world. Even though India will miss out on the visual experience, people in parts of North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia will get a chance to observe the partial eclipse. The key moment of the eclipse, the maximum phase, will occur at 08:14 AM IST.

Chandra Grahan 2024: Today Grahan Time

According to Indian Standard Time (IST), the lunar eclipse will happen on September 18, 2024, with several notable phases leading up to the event:

• Full Moon: The Full Moon, visible for three days from September 17 to 19, will offer a bright and beautiful supermoon sight across the sky. NASA has confirmed that the Moon will appear in its full phase from Monday evening through Thursday evening, allowing stargazers to enjoy its glowing presence.

Why India Will Miss the Lunar Eclipse?

India will not be able to view this Chandra Grahan as the Moon will be below the horizon during the eclipse. While this might be disappointing for those hoping to see it firsthand, the event continues to be important for religious reasons, with many people observing traditional rituals during the eclipse even when it’s not visible.

What Happens During a Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse, or Chandra Grahan, occurs when the Earth aligns itself directly between the Sun and the Moon. This alignment causes the Earth’s shadow to fall across the Moon, either partially or fully covering it. The extent of the eclipse depends on the alignment—sometimes the entire Moon is covered, while at other times only a part of it is obscured.

In the case of a partial lunar eclipse, the Earth’s shadow covers only a portion of the Moon, often giving it a reddish hue, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as a “blood moon.” According to NASA, during a partial eclipse, “the shadow of the Earth grows and then recedes without ever entirely covering the Moon.”

Even though India will not witness this spectacle in 2024, astronomy enthusiasts in other parts of the world will be treated to this awe-inspiring event. For those unable to watch it live, online streaming options are likely to be available, allowing a global audience to enjoy this celestial phenomenon from afar.
