Paris Paralympics 2024

Paris Paralympics 2024 : India’s journey at the 2024 Paris Paralympics got off to a spectacular start as the nation celebrated not one but two medals in a single event. Star shooter Avani Lekhara successfully defended her gold medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1, while debutant Mona Agarwal clinched the bronze, marking a historic achievement for Indian para shooting.

Let’s have a look into more details: Paris Paralympics 2024

Avani Lekhara

Avani Lekhara, who had captured the nation’s heart with her gold in Tokyo 2020, delivered yet another stellar performance in Paris. The 22 year old shooter from Rajasthan made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win consecutive gold medals at the Paralympics. In doing so, she also set a new Paralympic record with a score of 249.7, surpassing her previous record of 249.6.

Avani’s journey to the top was nothing short of dramatic. After a shaky start where she finished fourth in the first series, Avani made a remarkable comeback in the subsequent rounds. By the third round, she had surged to the top spot and never looked back. Despite fierce competition, particularly from Korean shooter Lee Yunri, Avani’s experience and nerves of steel saw her through to claim the gold in a nail biting finish.

Mona Agarwal

Mona Agarwal’s bronze medal in the same event was equally commendable. Competing in her first Paralympics, the 37-year-old shooter’s journey has been one of perseverance and determination. Mona’s path to the podium was filled with challenges, both on and off the field, making her achievement all the more inspiring.

Mona began the event in fifth place but displayed incredible resilience as the competition progressed. By the fourth round, she had moved into second place, setting up a thrilling showdown with her more experienced compatriot, Avani. Although she eventually finished with a bronze, Mona’s performance was a testament to her hard work and dedication to the sport.

A Bright Start for India at Paris Paralympics

India’s impressive performance on Day 2 of the Paris Paralympics has set the tone for what promises to be a successful campaign. With Avani’s gold and Mona’s bronze, India has already made a significant mark in the shooting events. The success of these two remarkable athletes highlights the strength and potential of India’s para-athletes on the global stage.

Avani and Mona’s achievements not only add to India’s medal tally but also serve as an inspiration to countless others. Their stories of overcoming adversity and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible are the very essence of the Paralympic spirit. As the games progress, all eyes will be on these two champions as they continue to aim for glory in their remaining events.

With more events to come, both Avani and Mona will be looking to add to their medal haul. Avani is set to compete in the Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone SH1 and Women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions SH1 events, while Mona will also be aiming for success in the Women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions SH1 and Mixed 50m Prone SH1 categories.

India’s early success at the Paris Paralympics is a sign of the growing strength and depth of its para athletic contingent. As the nation cheers on its athletes, there is a sense of anticipation and excitement about what the rest of the games will bring.
