Manchester City have won the 2024 FA Community Shield, defeating their rivals Manchester United 7-6 on penalties. The two sides scored late in the game to make it 1-1 after 90 minutes, and Manuel Akanji scored the winning goal to end City’s losing streak in the competition for the last three years.
While it still is a preseason tournament, City will be happy to start their season on a bright note. On the other hand, United need to go back to the drawing board and assess what they could have done better in the game.

After a cagey 80 minutes, Alejandro Garnacho upped the stakes by giving his side the lead. However, there was more drama to come as Bernardo Silva equalised in the 89th minute to send the game to penalties.
The Portugal international ended up missing from the spot, but Jadon Sancho’s penalty was saved by Ederson to keep City in the game. Jonny Evans blasted his penalty over the bar in what proved to be the fatal error.
Akanji then stepped up to make it 7-6 and win the shield for his side. With the first trophy of the season in the bag, City will be satisfied given they have now extracted revenge for the FA Cup final last season where they lost to United.
