Olympics history: Who is the first Indian individual to win a gold medal in history?

Abhinav Bindra was the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics. He achieved the feat at the 2008 Olympics when he clinched the top spot in the 10-meter air rifle event.

The veteran was recently awarded the Olympic Order, the highest honour that can be awarded by the IOC. He was also part of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, carrying the torch in the streets of the French capital.

Over the course of his career, the shooter has won the ISSF World Shooting Championship, two gold medals, a silver and a bronze at the Commonwealth Games alongside two bronze medals at the Asian Games.

The shooter last competed at the grand stage in the 2016 edition of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He finished fourth eight years ago, narrowly missing out on another Olympic medal. Since then, he has retired from competitive shooting and has now taken up a nurturing role for Indian talent.

To achieve this, Abhinav Bindra set up the Abhinav Bindra Targeting Performance (ABTP), and is also a mentor for the Indian contingent.
