Official: Thomas Muller retires from German national team after 14 years

Thomas Muller has officially announced his retirement from the German national team, after representing his country for 14 years. The Bayern Munich legend has earned 131 caps for the national team, and was a part of the World Cup winning squad in 2014.

The legend played a limited role at the 2024 Euros, mostly appearing off the bench. He was visibly emotional after the loss against Spain in the quarter finals, which ended Germany’s hopes of making it all the way in front of their home crowd.

Thomas Muller calls time on legendary career with Die Mannschaft

“It always made me very proud to play for my country. We celebrated together and sometimes shed a tear together,” said the forward in a farewell video on YouTube. “When I had the privilege of making my first international appearance over 14 years ago, I would never have dreamed of all this. I would like to say thank you to all the fans and my Germany teammates for their support over the years. Take the enthusiasm and joy of this year’s EUROS with you.”

Thomas Muller joins former Bayern Munich teammate Toni Kroos through the exit door after the Euros. The Real Madrid icon had confirmed that he would retire from professional football after the tournament, and his compatriot has now followed suit.

However, Muller is still under contract at Bayern Munich and intends to see it out till next summer. It remains to be seen if he will call time on his club career after the 24/25 season.

Germany’s future is in safe hands, with the likes of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz more than capable of handling any challenges on the biggest stages in the coming years.

How many goals did Muller score for Germany?

45 goals in 131 games
