Uruguay defeated Canada 4-3 on penalties in the third place playoffs of Copa America 2024. The two sides could not be separated over 90 minutes, and Luis Suarez’s last minute equaliser helped them finish 2-2.
Alphonso Davies missed the decisive penalty in the game, hitting the bar with his shot as Uruguay won the game. Ismael Kone had his penalty saved earlier, which only added more pressure on the Bayern Munich full-back’s shoulders.

Rodrigo Bentancur opened the scoring early for the Albiceleste, before Ismael Kone equalised fifteen minutes later. The Marseille midfielder’s night could have ended differently, had he been able to convert his penalty. But, it ended up being a bittersweet evening for the 22-year-old.
Jonathan David gave Canada a miraculous lead 80 minutes into the game, and they seemed all set to win until Luis Suarez stepped up. The legendary striker came up clutch in the second minute of injury time, before dispatching his penalty in the shootout.
Both Jesse Marsch and Marcelo Bielsa can have positive takeaways from the tournament in spite of being unable to win it. However, Uruguay will be the happier of the two teams, given they ended their season with a win.
