Mac shipments increased by a whopping 21% for Apple in the second quarter of its fiscal year, with growth far outstripping that of rivals during what is expected to be an expansive period now much-needed among global PC makers.
Apple Leads Surge in Mac Shipments
The expansion rate in the quarter ending June 2024 is according to IDC research firm, which specializes in the industry. Apple and Acer both grew based on overall shipments, the latter showing a 14% leap. The increase in the PC market, which has registered two-quarters of growth after spending a long time coming down from levels not seen since the panic buying spree during 2020 and 2021, continues.
IDC’s Ryan Reith said that the quarter-over-quarter growth was due to two consecutive quarters of double-digit expansion and stronger market interest in AI-focused PCs, as well as a commercial refresh cycle, heightened because last year companies of all sizes found it difficult to secure supplies. While IDC forecasts that AI-optimized PCs will help to fuel upgrades in the future, just 3% of all PCs shipped this year are optimized for AI tasks.
With Apple having to also enter into AI-enhanced PCs (which the market is trending towards), expectations Mac business could gain increased footing. The company showed the highest increase in global PC shipments – Mac deliveries hit a previous all-time Q2 high, up 20. Acer followed with a 13.7% increase. Conversely, Dell experienced a 2.4% decline in shipments, making it the only major company to see a decrease during this period. Similar figures were reported by Gartner in a new report.
IDC said demand remained soft in China lowering the overall results, but business outside of China showed shipment growth greater than 5%. Lenovo continues to have the highest market share at nearly 23% while HP grew just around a modest figure of 1.8%, holding on to almost 21% of the market.
According to Canalys, based on another batch of market research, global PC market growth was 3.4% more than a year ago, totaling 62.8 million units in Q2 2024. Apple, with 5.5 million units, took fourth place with a market share of 9%, increased by 63%. In first place, Lenovo has 14.7 million units, the second is HP, taking 13.7 million units and the third is Dell, 10.1 million units.
