Turkey have confirmed their place in the quarter finals of Euro 2024, making it to the last eight after 16 years.
Merih Demiral emerged as the unlikely hero for his country, as he scored a brace to help Turkey through. The defender blasted a corner kick home from close range 57 seconds into the game, scoring the fastest goal in Euro knockout stage history.

The game continued at breakneck speed, and both sides had a lot of clear-cut opportunities to score. Demiral doubled up his tally from a corner once again, with the defender making it 2-0 for Turkey an hour into the game.
Ralf Rangnick’s Austria played very entertaining football and were able to produce several great chances. However, they were unable to take them until Michael Gregoritsch equalised for his side shortly after Demiral’s second. Mert Gunok was called into making several top-notch saves to deny Austria, and had a positive night between the sticks.
In the end, the two goals were enough to see Turkey through to the quarter finals after a brilliant run so far. Now, they face a massive test in the Netherlands, adding to the great fixtures we will see at the tournament over the next few days.
