Switzerland have defeated Italy 2-0 in the first Round of 16 match of Euro 2024, ensuring that we will have new champions in a fortnight’s time. A pair of incredible goals sealed passage through to the last eight for the Reds, with Ruben Vargas playing an important part in both goals.
Italy looked lackluster in attack, with only one shot on target – a tame effort from Mateo Retegui, in the final quarter of the game. Gigio Donnarumma, on the other side of the field, was kept on his toes throughout.

Vargas picked out Remo Freuler in the box, who rushed in completely unmarked and chipped the ball up before smashing it past Donnarumma for the opening goal.
The 25-year-old then found the back of the net himself in the second half, with a picture perfect curling effort from the edge of the box, leaving Donnarumma no chance in spite of his towering stature.

Switzerland were far the better team in the game, and looked much sharper and cohesive than their opponents on the pitch. It is a very well deserved win for them, and makes them the first quarter finalists of this year’s European Championships.
