India to have common Type-C chargers for all smartphones by June 2025

A standard USB-C charging port would be included in all new smartphones and tablets sold in India as of June 2025, according to Mint, which cited anonymous sources. This will allow universal compatibility with a single charger and cable across devices.

The article published in Mint suggests that wearable technology, including smartwatches and entry-level feature phones, will not be included by the alleged rule. The goal of this shift, which is expected to take effect in June 2025, is to allow users to charge all of their gadgets using a single connection, thereby minimizing the amount of electronic trash produced by the many types of cords that devices utilize.

It is also stated that laptops are covered by this regulation, however, the rule is not expected to take effect until 2026. It’s assumed that the charging port under discussion is the more recent USB Type-C connector.

According to reports, the government decided to make USB Type-C the default charging mode in November 2022. “During the meeting, a broad consensus emerged among stakeholders on adoption of USB Type-C as a charging port for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops,” Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh stated at the time, following a meeting with industry players.

A broad range of devices are covered by the new regulation, including Windows and Mac computers in addition to smartphones and tablets running Android and iOS. But tiny accessories like earbuds, smartwatches, fitness bands, and entry-level feature phones are not covered by the statute.

Reports indicate that the legislation will probably be notified soon, even though the Indian Union IT Ministry has not yet released an official announcement.
