Mats Hummels has announced that he will be leaving Borussia Dortmund after spending 13 years with the club. The defender was one of the main reasons the team made it to the Champions League final this past season, but there was a mutual agreement between the player and the club to part ways at the end of the season.

The defender is likely to field offers from European clubs, with no plans to leave for Saudi Arabia or the United States as things stand.

“It was a huge honour and pleasure for me to have played for BVB for so long and to have been part of the journey from 13th place in January 2008 to what Borussia Dortmund is today,” Hummels said in a statement.

“This club with its fans is something very special — and for me much more than that.”

Hummels joins Edin Terzic through the exit door after the manager publicly announced that he would not continue from the coming season. The 35-year-old won two Bundesliga titles, two DFB Pokal trophies as well as three DFB Super Pokal titles while at Dortmund.
