Ajax have confirmed Francisco Farioli as their new head coach, bringing him in from Ligue 1 club OGC Nice. The Dutch side have paid €1 million to buy out the remainder of his contract until 2025, and he has now been revealed as the first Italian manager in the history of the club.

Farioli is also the first foreign manager of the club since Morten Olsen, who was in charge from 1997.

Things have been very disappointing for Ajax this season, especially with Erik Ten Hag leaving the club. The Amsterdam club endured their worst finish in the 21st century this year, coming in fifth place. They sacked Maurice Steijn in October, replacing him with interim boss John van’t Schip, but have now decided to bring in an exciting young manager who could help them regain stability.

“I am very happy to be here in Amsterdam, and together with the other staff members we will work diligently,” Farioli said on Thursday.

“We want to get back to basics and connect with what Ajax stands for. We also want to bring new energy with a positive way of working and thinking.

“We don’t want to waste any time and get ready for the start of the season now to bring Ajax back to where it belongs.”
