The TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology demonstrated the working first tri-foldable phone five years after the unofficial non-working prototype with the same design from 2019 at the Society for Information Display. The smartphone comes with a Free-type display that opens into a tablet-sized 7.85-inch screen. Unlike the smartphone-like concept, TCL assured that their solution is “more” tablet-oriented, for the screen keeps the typical aspect ratio for tablets.

The touchscreen is only available in the unfolded form factor, though it can be folded not only like a “G”, but like a “Z”. Regarding the thickness itself, the critical issue of the previous concept, the phone made by TCL is just 427 microns thin.

The All New TCL Tri-Foldable Phone

One of TCL’s tri-foldable phone’s top features is the SUP design, which stands for Sensor Under Panel. By embedding sensors into the screen, the SUP design facilitates 3D facial recognition from the mobile itself. This feature enhances the security of the mobile purchase and unlocking processes while giving the impression of a single solid display screen and maintaining uniformity.

Both the regular display region and the SUP area maintain a consistent pixel density level at 420 PPI to create the same high-quality display. The display also features innovations such as LTPO technology, which adjusts the refresh rate from 1 Hz to 120 Hz, allowing the device to utilize the least amount of energy while remaining adaptable. TCL also promises an extended lifespan for the device’s display, asserting that it will be able to withstand daily wear and tear.

With these latest events, the debut of TCL’s tri-foldable phone regarding its commercial launch date is currently unknown. Also, some rivals might shortly introduce similar tri-foldable equipment; for instance, Huawei is rumored to unveil a 10-inch tri-fold phone before the year ends.

Given the above, the TCL project may soon be irrelevant. To summarize, TCL’s tri-foldable phone and accompanying leap in foldable technology is a promising advancement, balancing elegance, sophisticated display capacity, and durability. However, its market realization remains uncertain, given that other industry players are entering the scene.
