Liverpool suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield to significantly dent their hopes of winning the Premier League title in Jurgen Klopp’s last season at the club. The German described the team’s “rubbish emotions” upon losing the game, in spite of having several chances to win.
Curtis Jones was visibly distraught in the game after putting his shot wide, in a 1v1 situation with Dean Henderson. And Klopp was quick to shift the blame from the youngster and point out that there were several other chances that senior players didn’t put away too.

“We had bigger chances than Curtis Jones’s chance”, he said. “We have the Darwin [Nunez] chance. He hits the ball full throttle — if he mishits it slightly there’s no chance for the goalkeeper.
“Similar with Diogo Jota. Mohamed Salah’s chance, it hits the Palace player on the line. That’s just horrendous, but we didn’t score there.”
The German added: “We had other moments and are only really talking about the massive chances. That’s how it is.
“We feel really rubbish and need now a bit of time to process that. It’s a really bad moment. It’s the second home game in a row we lose and we are not used to that. We have to see how we react. We have to work on that.”
Liverpool has a similar story in midweek when they lost 3-0 to Atalanta in the Europa League. The Reds were wasteful in front of goal in that match too, racking up an xG of 5, but scoring none. They’ll have to make sure they tighten things up both in attack and defence if they are to save their season in the time that’s left.
And it all starts with Liverpool’s trip to Bergamo, where they have to score at least three goals in 90 minutes to have a chance at buying themselves more time.
