Swapna Barman wins India’s 150th gold medal at the Asian Games.

Swapna Barman bags a gold in the women’s heptathlon! That’s the second gold medal for the day 11. Swapna got the gold with a good 800m finish, but an excellent javelin throw outing, that included a personal best, seems to have won it for Swapna. In the final race, she had to pip China and she did it in style.

Born in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Her mother Basana worked on a tea estate. Her father Panchanan Barman, was a rickshaw driver and is bed ridden after having suffered a stroke in 2013. She uses her prize money to look after her family who live in a house without a concrete wall. In 2016 she won a scholarship of Rs. 1.5 Lakhs in recognition of the success she had at athletics. She currently trains at the Sports Authority of India campus at Kolkata.

Swapna Barman fought off a tough and a stiff challenge from the neighbour Chinese’s Wan Qingling to claim gold in the heptathlon event with an aggregate of 6026 points, which is also a landmark as she crossed the 6000-point mark in the event. Swapna was ahead of Wang Qingling at the end of the penultimate event the javelin throw, which was completed on Tuesday. Barman had 5218 point on aggregate after the six events, while Wang was still on 5155, the minor difference of 63 points promising a keen finish to the event as both athletes had pretty close personal best times in the 800 metres, which was the climax of the event.

Wang had been leading after the initial events of the heptathlon but Swapna was in great form in the javelin throw. She was also in great form in the shot put, in spite of suffering from a toothache which required her to wear a medical bandage on her jaw.
