AMD Navi 48 GPU Confirmed: RDNA 4 Architecture Set for Radeon RX 8000 Series Gaming Cards

AMD‘s upcoming Navi 48 GPU, based on the RDNA 4 architecture, appears to be confirmed, according to recent ROCm commits. This GPU is set to power the next-generation Radeon RX 8000 series graphics cards.

The Navi 48 GPU is one of two RDNA 4 chips slated for the upcoming Radeon RX 8000 lineup, with the other being the Navi 44 GPU, which has also been mentioned in recent rumors. The initial integration commits for ROCm which are centered on Navi 48 GPUs indicate that preliminary testing is currently taking place in AMD laboratories.

Although specific information regarding this RDNA 4 GPU SKU is sparse on the ROCm GitHub repository recent speculations hint that the Navi 48 GPU is likely to outperform the chip aiming at higher-tier product offerings. However, it’s important to mention that the Navi 48 is not expected to be a high-end SKU to the Navi 31 (RDNA 3) or Navi 21 (RDNA 2) series due to AMD purportedly shifting its focus towards mainstream chips for the wider market.

The anticipated AMD Navi 48 GPUs are predicted to deliver performance levels to those of the Navi 31 while offering value propositions for gamers. For example, if AMD can achieve performance compared to the entry-level RDNA 3 SKU, namely the Radeon RX 7900 GRE priced around $549 US at a price range of $400 to $500 US it could present an option for gamers.

Significantly AMD RDNA4 GPU architecture will bring forth a design that might enable tuning of performance in ray tracing titles and introduce additional features like AI-based FSR upscaling technology in order to compete with NVIDIAs DLSS.

While not much information is out yet the upcoming series is likely to back GDDR7 memory starting with 28/32 Gbps chips containing 16Gb (2 GB VRAM each). However, AMD might go for GDDR6 chips at first. There are whispers that the processors will be compact and monolithic hinting at a move, from the MCD layout a year after its debut.
