Spotify partners with Chernin Entertainment to adapt original podcasts for movies and tv shows

Spotify has signed a multi-year contract with Chernin Entertainment to develop some movies and television series based on some original audio content.

The news comes amid the rising popularity of podcasts and the rise of original fictional dramas in the audio format while two Spotify originals have been already signed off for the video projects where one of the original projects includes Mr. Robot star, Rami Malek.

Chernin Entertainment Chairman and CEO Peter Chernin said in an official statement that Spotify has one of the largest libraries of original Intellectual Properties that exists in the world today and that library growing daily.

Dawn Ostroff, Chief Content Officer at Spotify added that “As we continue to expand our content ambitions, we are thrilled to collaborate with Peter Chernin, who, along with his exceptional team, are the perfect partners to help us share these stories with audiences across mediums and around the world.”

This partnership will include more than 250 original Spotify podcasts around the world and both the companies are already collaborating with the Pineapple Street Media on the adaptation of the podcast series The Clearing released back in 2018 is a true-crime podcast which revolves around the April Balascio, the daughter of American serial killer Edward Edwards.

Chernin Entertainment is behind the popular names like The Planet of the Apes trilogy, Ford v Ferrari, Hidden Figures, and The Greatest Showman, and also the TV series like New Girl, See, and Truth Be Told.

Till date two TV series have been developed based on the Spotify original podcasts one of them was Homecoming which released on Amazon Prime Video is based on a podcast of the same name by Gimlet Media, The Two Princess for HBO Max which is also based on an original podcast by Gimlet Media and Gimlet’s The Horror of Dolores Roach which is currently under development for the Amazon Prime Video.
