Nemanja Matic is set to sign for Lyon in the coming days, with a contract agreed until 2026. The midfielder will be joining from Rennes, as the two clubs already have an agreement over the move. And once he passes his medical test, he will soon be unveiled as a new signing for the French club.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United player signed for Rennes after his spell with Roma. And now, he has decided to remain in France, with a challenge to help out the relegation battlers after their fall from grace.
Nemanja Matic to sign for Lyon until 2026
Aged 35, the Serbian has made 13 appearances for Rennes in Ligue 1. Interestingly, Lyon and Rennes are set to face each other in their next league match, which Matic could sit out of if the transfer is not complete.
The Serbian enjoyed widely successful spells with both Chelsea and United. He was a valuable addition to the Roma squad as well, linking up with Jose Mourinho at the Italian capital. But things ended at the end of last season for the veteran as he moved on to try a new experience.
Perhaps the experience from a player like Nemanja Matic is what Lyon need to do better and turn their fortune around with half the season remaining. But, the investment in a player towards the end of his career could also backfire given how things stand for them right now.
